Professor Frazer is one of Australia’s most successful and internationally recognised scientists. With Dr Jian Zhou, Professor Frazer created the first vaccine to protect against a cancer.

The cervical cancer vaccine developed by Professor Frazer and Dr Jian protects young woman against four strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV), two of which cause 70 per cent of cervical cancers. Worldwide, more than 54 million doses have been given to girls aged 13 to 17 worldwide.

Professor Frazer continues to work on immunoregulation and vaccines for HPV associated cancers and to support efforts for distribution of much-needed HPV vaccines to women in developing countries.

KUALA LUMPUR 23 August 2010 – Australia remains Malaysia’s first preference for overseas study. That’s the message from the Australian High Commission as it promotes its ‘Study in Australia’ education series slated for early October.

Australia offers both quality education and quality lifestyle for its international students. The world’s only island-continent is the perfect place for students to grow, both academically and personally. In an interview, His Excellency Mr Miles Kupa, the newly appointed Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, provided updates on Australian education and the current bilateral relationship between the two countries.

“Australia’s appeal as a preferred destination has been enhanced by bilateral ties that date back to the 1950s through the Colombo Plan. In fact, second and third generation Malaysian students are now pursuing their studies in Australia,” said Mr Kupa.

Australian institutions offer a wide variety of courses that are popular with Malaysian students, from management and commerce, engineering and health to, more recently, a rising demand for dual qualifications. The call for niche and mainstream vocational courses and training has become increasingly important, in line with the 10th Malaysia Plan to see a more skilled labour market. A key feature of the Australian education system is the hands-on approach that provides students with practical examples to which they can apply newly acquired knowledge. This makes students highly employable graduates ready for their relevant workplace.

The learning environment in Australian institutions promotes regular student interaction and critical analysis, hence enabling students to develop their communication, analytical, problem-solving and creative thinking skills. It has been cited consistently that these are the soft skills that Malaysian and international employers deem as essential graduate attributes.

The diverse student population in Australian institutions provide ample opportunities for the development of interactive skills and an understanding of global dynamics which in turn prepares graduates to be globally employable. Australian institutions strongly believe in the value of global exposure with overseas internships and placements as an integral part of their studies.

“The forthcoming Study in Australia series of events, an annual Australian Government initiative, will provide a platform for students and their families to explore the opportunities that an Australian education can offer them personally and professionally,” said Mr Kupa.

The annual Study in Australia exhibition will be held on 2 to 3 October 2010 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Admission to this exhibition is free and the opening hours are from 12 to 6 pm. Visitors who register online at www.studyinaustralia.org stand to double their lucky draw chance of winning a ticket to Australia sponsored by Malaysia Airlines.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Australian High Commissioner launched a video contest themed ‘Similarities between Australian and Malaysian society.’ The contest is open to all Malaysian students aged 15 – 25. The High Commissioner is convinced that “our similarities draw us closer and the more you look, the more you see.” Two winners will each win an Apple iPad. More information is available on www.studyinaustralia.org and students can upload their videos on www.youtube.com/user/siamalaysia2010

Malaysia is currently the third largest source country for international students in Australia, in particular for undergraduate degrees. However, recent trends show that more Malaysians are choosing Australia for their postgraduate degrees. This is because according to students, Australia is one of the best places to live – a young, vibrant, exciting country, with high standards of living and safety. Living costs are comparably affordable and students as well as spouses are provided with the option of working full-time or part-time.

With education being a long standing pillar of bilateral ties between the two countries, the scholastic spirit and collaboration continues with the Australian Awards scholarship program that provides a range of postgraduate, vocational training and professional development scholarships for both Australian and Malaysian students.

Mr Kupa said, “Over 60 Malaysians have been awarded the Australia Awards scholarship program since its launch in 2006, studying subjects as diverse as women’s cancer, Islamic banking and optical wireless to improve mobile telephony.” Scholarships, depending on the nature and duration of the program are worth between RM70,500 and RM603,000. The next round of scholarships awards open 1 December 2010.
