Professor Ian Frazer BSc (Hons) MB ChB Edinburgh, FRCP(Ed), MD Melbourne
Director, Centre for Immunology & Cancer Research, University of Queensland
President, Australian Cancer Council
Fellow, Australian Academy of Science
2006 Australian of the Year
2008 Prime Minister’s Science Prize Award Winner
Professor Frazer is one of Australia’s most successful and internationally recognised scientists. With Dr Jian Zhou, Professor Frazer created the first vaccine to protect against a cancer.
The cervical cancer vaccine developed by Professor Frazer and Dr Jian protects young woman against four strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV), two of which cause 70 per cent of cervical cancers. Worldwide, more than 54 million doses have been given to girls aged 13 to 17 worldwide.
Professor Frazer continues to work on immunoregulation and vaccines for HPV associated cancers and to support efforts for distribution of much-needed HPV vaccines to women in developing countries.
Catching Cancer
Featuring Nobel Laureates, world experts – including Professor Ian Frazer – and virus hunters on the front line, Catching Cancer is a fast-paced investigation of the causes and triggers of cancer.
Combining intimate personal stories and intriguing science, Catching Cancer reveals how finding a hidden trigger, such as a virus, is not a reason to panic; it’s a reason to celebrate.
